A second approach to describing exceptionalities identifies symptom clusters or SYNDROMES derived through the use of multivariate statistical procedures such as FACTOR ANALYSIS or CLUSTER ANALYSIS.
There are two broad dimensions of behavioral and emotional disturbance:
- Externalizing Dimension - under-controlled problems; directed at others.
- Internalizing Dimension - over-controlled problems; internally directed or experienced. (Reynolds, 1992)
Some of the common syndromes found in both dimensions are:
- withdrawn
- anxious/depressed
- thought problems
- delinquent behavior
- somatic complaints
- social problems
- attention problems
- aggressive behavior (Achenbach, 1993)
These measures are important in highlighting the need to focus on adaptive as well as maladaptive functioning in the study of exceptionality.
